Actually, the problem of big government has grown since Pres. Washington and Hamilton's plan to assume state debt. Pres. Jackson oversaw the last time that the government was in the black. It is easy to talk principle but much harder to adhere to it when you are President. No Republican or Democrat can be trusted to reduce government size.

But it is not the President who we need to fear the most. Congress failed to even pass a budget for 2009. And they passed a mortgage industry bailout over the objections of constituents calling in 10 to 1 against. They are out of control. Until constituents step up their protests and then follow up by voting the offenders out, we are stuck with the insanity of encroaching socialism. Let's keep ringing freedom's bell and hope it doesn' fall on deaf ears.

Jeff, glad there are others who see government as the problem. And it has been that problem going back at least 70+ years to the FDR days. He started the mess and the Repulicans and Democrats have been trying to outdo each other ever since. And why is it the government? Who controls the money supply? Who sets interest rates? Who, year after year spends more than they have to spend? Who, by this year after year overspending causes inflation? Who, by causing inflation devalues pay checks and savings? Who, by passing a myriad of rules, laws and regulations make it virtually impossible for individuals and businesses to provide goods and services necessary for a vibrant and healthy economy? The answer is always, GOVERNMENT. Unless, and until enough believe this and convince government that "it" is the problem, nothing meaningful and successful will ever happen. And the next mess will be even larger, IF we are still around.
